Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Rome (Italy), Planned Demonstrations on May 6

The Italian State Police informed the U.S. Embassy in Rome that Saturday, May 6, 2017 there will be two demonstrations taking place in Rome.

The first protest, consisting of approximately 2,000 individuals from the leading three labor unions, will march in support of employees of AMA – Rome’s sanitation service provider.  The march, scheduled for the  hours of 0900 to 1300, will begin at Piazza dell’Esquilino and end at Piazza Madonna di Loreto using the following route:  Piazza dell’Esquilino, via Cavour, Largo Corrado Ricci, via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Madonna di Loreto (close to Piazza Venezia).

The second protest consists of approximately 3,000 individuals from groups demonstrating against Italian government labor and housing policy.  The march, scheduled for the hours of 1500 to 2000 will begin at Piazza Vittorio and end at Piazza Madonna di Loreto using the following route:  Piazza Vittorio, via dello Statuto, via Merulana, via Liberiana, Piazza dell’Esquilino, via Cavour, Largo Corrado Ricci, via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Madonna di Loreto (close to Piazza Venezia).

Italian police will monitor both events and do not expect any violence associated with the protests.  There may be traffic delays in the immediate area near the demonstrations.

The U.S. Embassy in Rome recommends that U.S. citizens and their families avoid the areas near the demonstrations and exercise caution if walking or driving in the vicinity.
