Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Tallinn (Estonia), Planned Demonstration on November 9

Europe > Estonia > Tallinn

The U.S. Embassy in Tallinn informs U.S. citizens of a planned demonstration scheduled for Wednesday, November 9, from 14:00 to 15:15 in front of the U.S. Embassy.  The stated purpose is to express solidarity with Native Americans against the Dakota Pipeline Protest as well as to support the U.S. government in its work to find a non-violent solution to the issue.  At 15:15, the demonstrators plan to march to Freedom Square.  The demonstration is expected to conclude at 16:00 at Freedom Square.  U.S. Embassy personnel have been advised to avoid the area during the demonstration and remain cognizant that the security situation can change rapidly in these scenarios.

Demonstration activities are expected to include prayers, singing, speeches, guitars, and drums.  Attendance should be quite low, but if the crowd grows large enough they may use a small portable amplifier.  Demonstrators are not expected to have any stages, tents, or other large items.  The event has been mentioned in the press, so the media may be on site as well.

Even demonstrations or gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
