Health Alert: Benin, COVID-19 Updates and Fraudulent Testing

Embassy of the United States of America

Cotonou, Benin

Health Alert Message for U.S. Citizens

January 27, 2021

Health Alert:  U.S. Embassy Cotonou, Benin

Location:  Benin

Event:  The government of Benin requires a negative COVID-19 test for all travelers departing the country by air.  The Embassy has received reports of COVID-19 testing scams and fraudulent COVID-19 test results attributed to non-government-sanctioned facilitators.  These facilitators may claim to be medical professionals.  Presenting a fraudulent test result to security personnel at the airport or border station when departing Benin could result in travel delays, fines, and/or imprisonment, even when the traveler is unaware of the test's illegitimacy.

All travelers, including U.S. citizens, should obtain a COVID-19 test only at a government-sanctioned clinic or service, especially when doing so for the purpose of traveling outside of Benin.  Registration for a test to travel from the Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport can be made through the Government of Benin’s official testing site.

See the CDC Proof of Negative Test Result page to view information on COVID-19 testing requirements for travel into the United States.
