Locations: Malambo, Baranoa, Sabana Larga, Polo Nuevo, Santo Tomas, Palmar de Varela, Galapa, Puerto Colombia, and Sabana Grande municipalities.

Event: The Embassy has observed an increase in violence in various towns in the Department of Atlantico. Violent crime, extortion, and targeted killings among illegal armed groups have increased dramatically. Do not travel to this area at this time. Out of an abundance of caution, some U.S. government employees have been withdrawn from this area. For more information about staying safe in Colombia, please consult the Colombia Destination Information Page at travel.state.gov .

Actions to Take:

  • Do not travel to Malambo, Baranoa, Sabana Larga, Polo Nuevo, Santo Tomas, Palmar de Varela, Galapa, Puerto Colombia, and Sabana Grande municipalities
  • Be aware of your surroundings.  Be vigilant on main roads.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as phones, expensive watches, or jewelry.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Keep car doors locked, and windows rolled up.
  • Monitor local news media for updates.
