Continued Flood and Landslide Risk

Location:  Communities near the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts

Event:  Search, rescue, and recovery operations continue following the August 26 flood in northern Rasuwa District. On August 30, Nepal’s disaster authority and Flood Forecasting Division warned communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers of possible fresh flooding following reports of increased upstream water flow.

Although one upstream lake has largely drained, authorities continue to monitor other upstream water accumulations and debris blockages. Fresh flooding and landslides remain possible.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasts heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Bagmati Province through September 1, with heavy rain still possible September 2. This rainfall may cause flash flooding, debris flows, landslides, and transportation disruptions.

Tribhuvan International Airport remains open, and domestic and international flights continue to operate. Kathmandu Valley and most of Nepal are not directly affected by the Rasuwa flood and remain open to travelers. The Prithvi Highway is open, although traffic remains restricted near Galchhi–Baireni. The Department of Roads reports partial opening on portions of the Galchhi–Trishuli–Syafrubesi–Rasuwagadhi route, but reliable through access beyond Dhunche has not been confirmed.

Actions to Take:

• Postpone non-essential travel north of Dhunche, including travel to Syafrubesi, Timure, Langtang-area trailheads, and Rasuwagadhi.
• Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, damaged bridges, unstable slopes, and active rescue sites.
• Move immediately to higher ground if authorities issue a warning or you observe rapidly rising water.
• Never walk or drive through floodwater.
• Verify your entire route immediately before departure and confirm flights directly with your airline.
• Do not enter affected areas to conduct independent searches or relief activities.
• Monitor official weather and flood information from Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Call 1155 for weather and flood information.
• U.S. citizens who were previously reported out of contact but are now safe should notify the Embassy of their location and status.
