Health Alert: Kinshasa (DR Congo), Confirmed Ebola Case in Goma

Location:  Goma 

 

Event:  On July 14, 2019, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in the city of Goma in the province of Nord-Kivu. This is the first confirmed case in this city. Over 2500 confirmed and probable cases have been reported in the nine health zones of Congo's Nord-Kivu and Ituri provinces since the first confirmed case was reported in August, 2018. 

The CDC has issued a Level 2 Travel Notice for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 

Ebola is one of the hemorrhagic fever illnesses. Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected persons or their blood, bodily fluids and secretions; through direct contact (handling or washing) with infected corpses; or through contact with objects that have been in contact with infected secretions. 

 

Actions to Take:

  • Take active steps – including malaria prophylaxis – to avoid malaria and other insect-borne and gastrointestinal illnesses that may mimic Ebola symptoms and lead to preventable health scares.
