Event: The Government of Nepal announced a lockdown in Kathmandu from April 29 to May 14. All official travel and all in-country personal travel for U.S. Embassy personnel has been suspended. U.S. Embassy personnel have been directed to avoid all unnecessary trips.
Embassy Services: The U.S. Embassy will remain closed for routine U.S. citizen services and for all visa services for the duration of the lockdown. All U.S. citizen services appointments will be rescheduled. In the event of an immediate need for service or an emergency, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to request an emergency appointment or call 01 423 4000. The Embassy will reopen U.S. citizen services appointments after the lockdown is lifted.
Travel: U.S. citizens who wish to depart Nepal should take advantage of available commercial transportation options now. Foreign travelers whose flights originate outside of Nepal are prohibited from using Tribhuvan International Airport as a transit stop to a third country. All passengers using Qatar Airways are required to take a PCR test from a pre-approved laboratory no more than 48 hours before departure. Passengers are requested to carry one additional copy of the PCR negative test report along with them while travelling. All other airlines require a negative PCR test results no more than 72 hours before departure. Passengers should check the airline's and destination country's website for updated information. According to widespread media reports, a 10 day quarantine has been reinstated for all international arrivals to Nepal.
Regional Restrictions: Other government implemented restrictions could be specific to a village, city, district, or region and may be enforced by the police and/or military. Such restrictions have the potential to result in the forced isolation of travelers and prevent the ability of individuals to return home. The Embassy’s ability to assist in your return could be compromised for an extended period of time. Please make an informed decision fully cognizant of the possibilities and probabilities of further movement restrictions imposed by the Government of Nepal. You are reminded to exercise a heightened level of caution and to follow all Government of Nepal instructions during the lockdown.
Consult the CDC website, for the most up-to-date information regarding enhanced screening procedures.
