Location: Uruguay, nationwide. 

Event: The Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health reported an increase in Meningitis  cases in the country in 2026 and is offering the vaccine without cost to children and adolescents at any immunization clinic.  Travelers who are fully up to date with the U.S. recommended vaccination schedule are already protected and do not need an additional vaccine. Families can find more information about vaccination appointments online .

Meningitis is a rare but serious disease caused by a subtype of meningococcal bacteria. In rare cases the meningococcal bacteria can cause serious illness (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicemia (blood poisoning), which can rapidly lead to sepsis and death. Symptoms to look out for include: 

• a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed with a glass 

• sudden onset of high fever 

• severe and worsening headache 

• stiff neck 

• vomiting and diarrhea 

• joint and muscle pain 

• dislike of bright lights 

• very cold hands and feet 

• seizures 

• confusion/delirium 

• extreme sleepiness/difficulty waking
