Security Alert: Conakry (Guinea), Ongoing Protest-related Violence in Middle Guinea

Subject:  Security Alert - U. S. Embassy Conakry, Guinea January 15, 2020

-Throughout Middle Guinea

 

Event:  We have received official and unofficial reports of violence related to protest activity, and of increased criminal activity, throughout Middle Guinea, and of increasing official and unofficial roadblocks throughout the region. 

In Pita, the gendarmerie and central police stations were attacked, ransacked, and set on fire.

In Labe, the prefecture administrative headquarters and several other governmental offices were attacked.  

Protesters have attacked public buildings, including prefecture administrative headquarters in Dalaba and Lelouma, and the Gendarmerie and central police station in Pita.  

In Daka, the police station was attacked, and private stores were ransacked and burned.  

U.S. Government personnel have been instructed to defer all non-essential travel to these regions.  

  • Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
  • Monitor local media for breaking events and be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • Keep travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Review the Crime and Safety Report for Guinea.
