Event:  There has been a notable increase in automotive-related crimes of opportunity throughout Havana.  Crimes include vehicle break-ins, car part thefts (such as side mirrors and windshield wipers), and attempted vehicle thefts. 

Deteriorating economic conditions have led to a broad increase in crime across Cuba.  U.S. citizens should maintain heightened vigilance, including regarding vehicle safety.

Actions to Take:

• Always lock doors and roll up windows completely, even when in the vehicle.
• Never leave valuables or important documents inside an unattended vehicle. 
• Whenever possible, park vehicles behind locked gates or inside garages overnight and during extended stays. 
• When visiting commercial establishments, like restaurants and stores, consider utilizing local parking attendants (called “parqueadores”).  Actively identify if an individual is monitoring vehicle security and confirm they are overseeing the street or lot. (Please note, you may consider confirming this information directly with the commercial establishment and what fee, if any, is associated with the service).
• Notify local authorities if you are a victim of theft.  In Cuba, the emergency numbers are 106 for the police, 105 for the fire department, and 104 for the ambulance.
• U.S. citizens with emergencies can call +(53) (7) 839-4100; after hours dial 1, then 0. The Embassy can provide help if you need assistance replacing a lost or stolen passport.
