Location: Santa Marta and surrounding areas of Magdalena and Guajira Departments, including the Troncal del Caribe (Route 90) corridor through Palomino and approaches to Tayrona National Park and the Zona Bananera.

Event: Colombian authorities report that an illegal armed group announced a 72-hour armed transportation blockade, shutdown of civilian activities, and absolute curfew (extending through noon on Friday) following a government security operation.  Subsequent incidents have included the burning of vehicles, intimidation of commercial establishments (including armed threats and shootings), and disruptions to public transportation, businesses, and movement in parts of Santa Marta and surrounding areas.  Authorities have increased military and police deployments in the city and along key routes, imposed temporary restrictions on motorcycle passengers, and suspended school activities in affected areas as a precautionary measure.  Isolated road disruptions on the Troncal del Caribe have also been reported.

Travel on some routes in and around Santa Marta may be delayed, limited, or unsafe.  Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar (Simón Bolívar International Airport) is open and operating.  The route to the airport from Santa Marta and the road toward Barranquilla is currently open, although conditions can change quickly.

U.S. citizens are advised to monitor official sources for security updates and the latest information on road closures.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid areas of reported unrest, roadblocks, large gatherings, and security operations.
  • If you encounter large groups or hear gunfire, shelter in place immediately.
  • Do not confront armed individuals or groups.
  • Maintain a high level of vigilance.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Monitor local media for security updates and road closures.
