Location: Madre de Dios Department and surrounding areas
Event: The Regional Health Department for the Department of Madre de Dios has declared a public health alert due to an outbreak of Dengue Fever. The outbreak represents the largest number of cases seen in the region in over the past five years. To date, authorities report more than 3,000 cases, including 18 deaths.
The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. government personnel to postpone non-emergency travel to Madre de Dios Department until the outbreak subsides, and to take mosquito avoidance precautions if required to travel to the area. Mosquito avoidance precautions include covering exposed skin while wearing long sleeves, pants, and hats; and applying DEET or another CDC-approved insect repellant to clothing and exposed areas of the body. Additionally, U.S. government personnel are advised to take anti-malaria medication for travel to the city of Puerto Maldonado in Madre de Dios.
Please note that public sector health facilities report significant backlogs due to the epidemic. Rural and urban areas are equally affected.
