Warden Message: Uzbek Independence Day Information

U.S. Embassy Tashkent issued the following Warden Message on August 29, 2005:

The Republic of Uzbekistan is celebrating its Independence Day on September 1st. As this holiday nears, we expect the Government of Uzbekistan will increase security throughout the country and particularly in Tashkent. There will be numerous street closures and traffic detours included in this increased security posture. Please give yourself ample time during this period to reach your destination.

Public transportation will run, but expect that additional police officers will monitor buses, trams, and other public vehicles, and may stop passengers for document checks. Security checkpoints at the city limits will be reinforced with armed MVD troops and random document checks will increase in frequency. Be prepared for inconveniences and delays entering the capitol. On August 31, 2005 Metro trains will not be stopping at Yoshlik and Khalklar Dustligi stations and will be closed from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Pedestrian and vehicular traffic will be restricted. Everyone should have identification documents in the event that police ask for them.

Typically, the government closes the following streets for Independence Day celebrations.

August 31st 

- Khalklar Dustligi (Druzhba Narodov) street between Mukimiy street and A.Khujaev street (Khalklar Dustligi - "Druzhba Narodov" Square)

- A.Khujaev street (Khalklar Dustligi - "Druzhba Narodov" Square) between Samarkand Darbaza street and Uzbekiston street 

- Uzbekiston street between Khalklar Dustligi (Druzhba Narodov) street and Abay street 

- Bobur street between B.Boboev street and M.Gafurov street 

- M.Gafurov street between Bobur street and Almozor street 

- T.Tula street between Uzbekiston street and M.Gafurov street 

- Furkat street between M.Gafurov street and Navoi street 

- Entrance to the tunnel from Gulom street 

- Entrance to the tunnel from Zaykaynar street

September 1st 

From 06:00 to 22:00, the following sites will not be accessible by motor vehicles or traffic there will be limited: 

- Uzbekistan National Park (Besh-Yogoch) 

- Mustakillik Square 

- Khalklar Dustligi (Druzhba Narodov) Square 

- Navoi Theater Square 

- Khadra Square 

- Mirzo Ulugbek Square 

- Saylgokh ("Broadway") street 

- Amir Temur Square 

- Akmal Ikramov, Bobur, Mirzo Ulugbek, Gafur Gulom, Furkat, Kodiri Navoi Parks

Please keep these street closures and heightened security measures in mind and allow for ample travel time to destinations.

The Embassy will be closed on September 1 for Uzbek Independence Day and Monday September 5 for U.S. Labor Day. In case of an emergency, please contact us at 120-54-50.
