Health Alert: Conakry (Guinea), Ebola Outbreak in the Gouecke Sub-District of the N’Zerekore Region

Location: Guinea

Event: The Ministry of Health (MOH) declared an Ebola epidemic in the Gouecke sub-district of the N’Zerekore region on February 14.  Following one death in Gouecke, the MOH identified seven suspected Ebola cases.  Three of the seven were tested and confirmed positive for Ebola via a PCR laboratory test.  Three patients have died, three are in isolation in N'zerekore, and one is in isolation in Conakry.

The United States government, including the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Defense, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are closely monitoring the epidemic, and are coordinating with the Government of Guinea, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other partners to provide rapid, localized outbreak control.

Ebola symptoms can include fever, aches and pains, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, and unexplained bruising or bleeding.

Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids from someone infected with Ebola or objects contaminated with these bodily fluids.

Actions to take:  Frequent hand washing and social distancing are both important prevention methods.  It is also important to monitor one’s health for 21 days after travelling to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak.
